"We learn to do by doing."

We can do a thousand things without learning anything while doing them. When learning becomes automatic you cease to learn by doing. The fact that you're doing a thing well does not signify that something well is going on and you're learning from it. We learn to do by doing, but have never even appreciated that we learn to know by knowing, and never so much as expected. This maxim is true when it refers to the general law that drill Learning to do gives skill.
